Majhigama

In Bharat, names are significant. Name of a person is carefully chosen based on many factors. It cannot be said with certainty in present days. It is told that Names carry lot of significance. If the name of a person is so significant then how important should be naming a place. I have not come across any deliberation concerning name of place. i did not even see any record. there are always some myth attached with names of place. Going by this account, every name carries itself a very significant aspect of the history of the place.
The name of my Village is Majhigama. in present day it does not mean anything meaningful. I remember somebody saying that it surrounded by various water bodies. Since, it was in center so it was called Madhyagram. Gram getting transformed into Gama could be understood i.e. Gram to Grama to Gama. But what about the first part?
I came across a bhajan in which there comes a line
"Majhadhaar kinaraa banjaye."
I Which it is said that by God`s grace even the turbulent current becomes the secured bank.
"Majhadhaar" word means the water current. I think it must have originated from "madhyadhaar", as the water currents are strongest in the middle of the river. So here I see "Madhya" turning into "Majh"
Going by this definition nomenclature of "Majhigama" might have originated from the word "Madhya Grama". It certainly needs to be further verified.
I dont know properly but with whatever knowledge I have, from that I can say it must have been of greater importance in early days. It has sizable population of Rajpoots and even few Brahmins home. While in the neighboring villages I don’t think they have Brahmins or Rajpoots. Those villages are populated by Kurmi, Yadav and Dusaadh caste. Of course Majhigama has members of almost every community. May be, this was the central villages surrounded by its subsidiary villages. May be land owners settled few of those people, in central village to get service from them at wish. Why I say this is because the prime land in the village is with Rajpoots. They have spacious homes, where as the other caste people have very narrow homes. Again, there may be more evidence to support this. One of the evidence which I heard is that people in a neighboring village, which is populated by Koeries and other smaller groups, were mainly laborers in the field of the landlords. For ages they were like that. Our grandfather, Subodh Narayan Singh, who was a freedom fighter and inspired by ideologies of socialists like Lohia, Thakur and Suraj Babu, fought for their right and freed them from bandhua majadoori, a type of slavery. More of this can be discussed under some other topic. This is a nice link prestigious link which I have to the history of surrounding. I am also not completely aware of such links so I think that people of other villages will also choose to forget about the link. That is very natural. Moreover Our father chose to get employment outside the village and we ventured further far away has weakened the link with land and the people.
This gives some hint about the name and history of our Village. While I write this a stray though come to my mind and that is another possible origin of the name Majhigama. Again, it can be spit in two words Majhi and Gama. The later part can be undisputedly from Grama which means village but the first word can be linked to word Maajhi, which means one who rows boat. I don’t see any one of that caste in our village and there is not even a river to support such occupation. That does not stop me from finding some support for such idea. If the world is called as the deep ocean, (Bhavasagar) then a guru is called the person who takes you across. So if there was a guru of that type in this village then it can be called as Majhigram which with time getting modified in to Majhigama. Such and origin ask for people with philosophical bent of mind. I don’t find such tradition in our village. So I conclude that such and origin has bleak chance.
