Anahat

This is a story of some ancient time.
Long long ago. There was a society, highly developed. Most of the people could get everything they desired for. They took pride in themselves and their power. Of course, there were people who did not get what they desired and they were called poor. These were despised by the others, who were rich. Poor are always there. Some are seen and some remain unseen. Among them, there a one man, Anahat, who did not desire much and that is why, he did not need much. People did not know if he was poor or rich. But he was also part of them. Worked with them and eat with them and lived with them.
Once, a man come to the street, where Anahat lived. He asked for food from many homes. What he got was ridicule and frowns. Anahat felt that the man radiated a smile, not diminished even by the hunger. he felt sense of holiness in his appearance.
The holy man extended his hands for alms to Anahat. It was a surprize for Anahat. No body had come to his home for food till now. Even beggars knew that there was no surplus at his home and even whatever available was never cooked to satisfy the taste buds. They preferred to eat the remnants of the restaurant than to ask him for food. He called him to his home and gave him food and drink. After partaking food, the holy man told Anahat, "Keep food with the name of God, keep water with name of God. when the dark clouds will arrive, dont drink water which will flow at that time. Don’t eat food which will grow at that time." Saying so the holy man took leave.
Anahat barely had anything to carry to next day. but he decided to follow the words of the Anahat, kept little grain and water and chanted name of God. he shared his thought with his friends but they told that he had gone mad following world of another mad. It was summer and water became precious. But Anahat kept filling the pots with little water every day and kept adding little grain saving from his daily wages.
And then arrived the monsoon. Every one rejoiced. The clouds were darker than usual. They did not know why?. but nobody cared. Anahat saw the dark clouds and resorted to his store of water and food. It rained. Rain percolated in every water source and in the sap of every plant. strange sickness was appearing the city. people were becoming violent with the slightest of the reason. When Anahat appeared from his home, he saw the disturbed people and wondered about their state. They wanted to tear his cloths too and wanted him also to join them in the violent street play. He ran back in his home to escape from them. He heard people saying him a mad.
He remembered the words of the holy man. He thought he could help his friend at least. He took little of water in a small vessel. At his friends house, where he was welcomed in the merriment. He wanted to tell them about the water. They did not believe him. Instead, after listening, they made fun of him and wanted him to drink their water and be one with them. He returned with his vessel of water.
He confined himself to his room ate little and drank little. He waited for the dark cloud to recede. He was getting news that violence was increasing in the city every other day people were getting killed by their own near and dear. Harsh laws were being imposed to curb it but it was leading to more and more anarchy.People discussed about it but did not know which law could make it alright. Anahat's wages had also reduced. he was surviving on his saved food and water and with the name of God.
One day a Anahat heard knock on his door. He opened there was a lady and a little child. He remembered seeing here at the house of her friend where he had gone to meet. He called her inside. she seemed to be in hurry to tell him something.
"This is my child. He has lost his father. I know I too cannot live longer. There is nobody who can take care of this child. They want to take wealth. I cannot give my child in hand of such people." said the lady.
everything was like shock to Anahat.
"how did you loose your husband?"
"Few days back, i had fight with my husband and i did not allow him to enter home. He was killed on the road in front of our home that night. I feel I am responsible for all these. But I don’t know how it happened. Now, there are many people want the money that he had accumulated."

"This morning, i was thirsty and there was no water nearby. i saw a small bottle of water and drank it. my agitated mind became calm. and i could see the situation clearly. i understood what is most important at this time. i must save my child. i realized it was the bottle which you had left at my home few days back."

"That looks amazing. What do you want me to do?"
Today there will be judgment about the sharing of my husband’s wealth. And i know there are many vultures eying their pound of flesh. I have to fight to protect it. I don’t know if I can or not. Even if I win, i know they will not let me live longer. I want to save my child. And I know only you can take care."
“You are from a prestigious and rich family. Are you ready to believe a person like me?"
"Yes I feel only you can do it. Take care of this child" saying so she handed the child to Anahat, kissed on the forehead and left the room. she came back and wanted to give her golden bangles to Anahat. But he stopped her.
"Not having gold has saved me till now. If People will know that i have gold they will not let me live in peace. Don't worry, i can take care of your child even without your gold. Your gold could not provide security to the child even in your home"
She looked deeply in the eyes of Anahat and left the place.
Child started crying. Anahat did not know what to do to calm the child.
he tool little water and gave it to child. Child became calm with the sip of water.
He was tendering the child with great care. Now he had two, to give him company, the name of God and the child.
People were dying of unknown diseases. The cremation ground was busy round the clock.

He saw his store of water was going down. But he also noticed that the clouds were thinning. and one day rainbow too appeared. But the city had been ruined. Most of the people were suffering from some or other disease, physical, mental, behavioral or other. They looked very disturbed. He wanted to help them but most of the time they did not want his help.
One day he saw the holy man again. He fell at the feet and invited him home. Holy man blessed the child. He also told him about some more people who were saved from the calamity. Next day he left for the address which the holy man had given him. He saw people were sitting together and singing names of God. They had a leader in the center.
He introduced himself and was taken in the group. Later he came to know that like him other were also visited by holy man and had saved food and water with name of God. But every one gave a different description of the holy man. They were puzzled. So they asked the leader to give his opinion. Leader smiled and told, “The holy man is not in the outside world but inside you, always guiding and guarding you. He appears in the form which you can accept. Sometimes you listen sometimes you don’t. He has been advising since ages. My grandfather also talked about that holy man. He is eternal."
Anahat asked about the people who are still suffering in the city.
"They too will be saved from suffering when they will listen to the words. But the question is that they still don’t feel that they are suffering they like the suffering so they continue to. The holy man will never give up. He is always advising. Don’t worry"
They sang name of god and lived together with love of God as a strong bond between them.
